Prophet Muhammad’s marriage to Ayesha
One of the most misunderstood aspects of Prophet Muhammad’s life is his marriage to Ayesha.
The misconception
What people mistakenly believe is that the Prophet married Ayesha when she was 9 years old. This of course is seen as something controversial and immoral from today’s standard.
The Prophet would never do something immoral; he was sent as an example for Muslims and so this topic requires close analyisis and clearing up.
The cultural history
In the Prophet’s time 1400 years ago, to betroth someone at a young age was common. The topic of marriage to Ayesha came up when she was young, but this marriage did not take place till she was of marriageable age since Islam says a girl should get married at puberty. Our Prophet never did anything that Islam wouldn’t allow.
In today’s culture
This concept seems strange by today’s standards but we have to look at it from the point of the culture back when this took place. Today’s culture also promotes gay marriage as something acceptable, so clearly the culture now has taken a different turn from how things used to be, and people who are in this culture find it hard to think outside of it back to how things were.
