First Hijab Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week – Hooray for tolerance!

I was super proud to read a story about Indonesian fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan being the first designer to have models wear hijabs on the runway at one of the fashion industries biggest events – New York Fashion Week.

This is a great step towards non-Muslims and Muslims alike understanding the hijab, and how it can still make a woman beautiful (if anything enhance her beauty), and seeing that the girls who wear it are not necessarily “oppressed” or “forced to wear it”. It also shows that Muslim women like Anniesa can pursue their dreams and talents, and Muslim society will not oppose them having a career. The Prophet Muhammad’s first wife Khadijah was a successful business woman, and it makes me glad to see other Muslim women following their dreams and becoming successful businesswoman, despite cultural (note: not religious) stigmas on working women.
